This list shows the scope of concordats. They can involve: 

• a group of countries (like the Organisation of African Unity)
• an individual nation
• a state within a nation (like the more than 30 concordats with the 16 states of Germany)
• or even a single building, if it opens the door to a secular country (like the French convent in Rome) or has enough money attached to it (like the notorious "Basilica in the Bush").

Green hillsides slope down to the villa and continue down to Lake Albano. The town of Albano can be seen, with its ancient buildings clustered around a square, and the Tyrrhenian Sea sparkles on the horizon.*]

1991

18 May. Exchange of (Diplomatic) Notes between Italy and the Holy See regarding the “Passetto del Borgo”.

The Passetto del Borgo was the pope's secret escape route, a covered fortified corridor leading from his residence in the Vatican (top of the picture) to the safety of the Castel Sant' Angelo (at the bottom). The castle is a huge round tower by the Tiber, built as Hadrian's tomb, but later fortified as a papal refuge. Alexander VI (the Borgia Pope) used this passageway to reach the safety of the castle, and during the sack of Rome Clement VII fled by this route, as well. 

At the far (southern) end of the bridge leading to the castle is the Piazza Ponte San Angelo, one of the Papal  States' places of execution.
